How to Build a Snow Fort - A Brief Introduction December 22, 2008 10:11

Winter is a great time to spend at the cabin. Everything looks different under a heavy layer of snow and the opportunities for recreation are endless. However it’s tempting to hibernate inside especially with a good fire and book on the go. Be warned though. You will not escape the ravages of cabin fever. No matter how perfect your cabin is in terms of design it too will host this easily treatable disease, especially in winter. Fortunately cabin fever can be treated quickly by getting outside and building a snow fort.

Snow forts? Aren’t I too old for that? In a word no. There are a number of reasons to build a snow fort. One of which is the fact that it is the greenest of building practices. All natural, self insulating and totally biodegradable by way of evaporation. Furthermore the materials are free and finally lets face it, you never gave up your love for snow fort building even if you haven’t built one since your mittens were tied together through your coat with string. Snow fort building is wintertime architecture for all ages.

This is the beginning of a series on snow fort construction. Before we jump in with the tools and techniques you might want to review this NFB classic for some inspiration from the masters of the trade.
